Ebbs & Flows

I’ve recently been thinking a lot about what makes us successful in life. What is the difference between success and failure? Why do some people perform so poorly when they seemingly have every advantage? And why is it that some people that appear to have it all end up so unhappy?

In my opinion, if you succeed and you are not fulfilled, that’s the definition of failure. This past year has been very challenging for me, yet filled with many blessings. As I reflect, something that my friend said to me keeps coming to mind. He said, “You know it better than most what life does, it ebbs and flows.” That really stuck with me, so I decided to look up where that phrase came from.

Ebb and flow are two phases of the tide, or a recurrent or rhythmical pattern of coming and going or a decline or regrowth. I believe most of us are very familiar with the ebbs and flows of life. That brings me back to what makes the difference in how we perform. Tony Robbins said this, and it really had a powerful impact on me. He said that “Information without emotion is rarely maintained.” That’s a lot to think about. If you reflect back to a memory that has stayed with you for years and years, my guess is that there are some strong emotions connected to it.

So how can we take everything we want and make it a reality? How do we make it through the ebbs and flows of life and perform better? It’s unrealistic to say that there is someone out there that finds the sweet spot in life where everything is perfect, and then stays there until the day they die. We all have ups and downs in life, but that doesn’t mean we’re doing something wrong. We just need to ride the wave and learn along the way.

I’m sure you have achieved something in your life that you thought was impossible at one time, but today it's in your life. You made it happen, right? What was it that made it go from impossible to possible? That's what you have to figure out. You probably became consumed by it at some point, so much so that nothing would come in your way of making it a reality. If it’s not really important to you, you’ll never achieve it. In many cases, it has been proven that drive and determination win over knowledge or experience. Read that again.

Often times I'm asked what drives me. Even my Mom asks me that. In my mind, what I'm hungry for gives me the drive to push through what seems impossible. I guess I'm hardwired that way. In order for me to “drive” across the finish line of any one of my goals, I have to want it more than anything else. Nothing will get in my way. One statement I constantly preach is that you will always make time for what’s important to you. Isn’t that true?

The other common denominator that drives me towards success is taking massive action. I don’t believe in excuses. Connecting the dots, driven by emotion, I take massive action, even when I have no idea how I will achieve it. Often times the simple belief within myself, paired with massive action is what makes a dream become a reality.

So what is it exactly that makes a difference in people’s lives? What I discovered is very simple. There’s nothing you can’t create or achieve if you are hungry enough and take massive action, while continuously changing your approach. The thing you can not control is how much time it will take for you to achieve it. One of my biggest achievements took me 15 years to reach. Patience and perseverance is everything.

I was inspired to write this post because I have been working on my self-care strategies to improve the quality of my life. I’m always thinking, challenging myself to grow, and working on becoming a better woman. We go through different phases or seasons in our lives, and what’s most important to you will change as you grow.

I hope my words leave you with a sense of peace and encouragement. Remember, when your efforts are not producing the desired results, simply adjust and keep going. It all comes down to how badly you want it, how much action you take and that you truly believe it will become a reality.
